Obituary

Walter Hylwa, longtime resident of Meriden, CT passed away peacefully, July 5, 2019 at Mid State Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was 95. Born in Shelton, CT, son of William and Anastasia (Listinski) Hylwa, Walter was a World War II veteran proudly serving in the US Navy. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Master’s Degree in Architecture in 1953. He worked for firms in Philadelphia, PA and New Haven, CT before opening his own architectural office in Meriden in 1962. His prolific professional career included the design of churches, schools, commercial and municipal buildings and private residences throughout Connecticut.

Walter was passionately involved in the protection of the environment and the wildlife it sustained both locally and nationally. An avid fly fisherman he grew up with a love and appreciation for nature and the outdoors. Amongst his many affiliations, he was President of the Connecticut Wildlife Federation, Board Member of the National Wildlife Federation, President of the Connecticut Conservation Association and founder of the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association. Because of his efforts, the Quinnipiac River today supports fish, wildlife and birds such as osprey and bald eagle and has become a wonderful recreation spot for people throughout the region.

Walter was a proud resident of Meriden and served on many local committees including the Conservation Commission, Flood Control Implementation Agency. He was also a founding member of the Meriden Rod and Gun Club.

When not fly fishing on the Salmon River, Walter enjoyed a good game of golf. He was proud of his low handicap and long, straight drives. He also was a music lover and enjoyed playing classical music on the piano.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jeanne (Miller); daughter Laura Gardiner and her husband Geoffrey of Springtown, PA; son Wayne and his wife Alrun of Morris, CT; son Craig and his wife Carmen Amalia Valdés of Guaynabo, PR and daughter-in-law Mae Reeves of New Haven, CT. Beloved Grandchildren: Christopher Hylwa, Jennifer Hylwa, Enrique Tomás Hylwa-Valdes and Blake Newcomer. He was sadly predeceased by son, Kenneth on April 19 of this year.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 9 at 10:00 am at the chapel at Walnut Grove Cemetery, 817 Old Colony Rd Meriden, CT followed by a burial. Friends and family are invited to attend. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St. Meriden, CT 06450.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association, 540 Oregon Rd, Meriden, CT 06451, may be made in his honor. For online condolences please visit jferryfh.com.

Heartfelt condolences to Walt's wife Jean and his children and their families. A sad day to hear that a fellow conservationist, like Walt, has passed on. I had the opportunity to work along side Walt at the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association during the mid 80's, 90's and early 2000's. Walt balanced his work and conservation in a way that is very noteworthy and remarkable. As a talented architect he was the master of depicting buildings and architecture for the construction business but he also understood the respect for nature and making sure the natural environment was maintained for wildlife as well as for humans. Walt always endeavored to make people aware of the need for clean water, clean air, abundant fish and wildlife and open space for humans. We will not forget the contributions that Walt has made for our natural environment over the years. Although he wasn't as much in the conservation limelight in the last few years , does not diminish the great contributions he made over his 95 years on our beautiful earth. Walt may you find an infinite amount of beautiful landscapes with an abundance of trout streams to fly-fish !

To Mrs. Hylwa and family:

It is with great sadness to read of Walter and Kenny. I will always remember Walter as a friend, and office building neighbor. Memories of Walter are so clear, he would stop at our office daily, and chat with my father, Lewis Budd. Very fond memories of days gone by.

With most sincere condolences,
Heidi Izzo and family

Dearest cousins and Aunt Jeanie. My fondest memory of your father is drawing horses with Laura in the living room of your first house in Meriden. I remeber the English Setters as a contrast to our Irish Setters. I remember your beautiful house that your father built on that hill and seeing how proud he was of his accomplishment as he should have been. I remember my Mother and he had a fierce affection for one another as some of the youngest Hylwa clan. This usually meant a passionate argument of some sort. Uncle Walt was a force of Nature and someone I always looked up to. Rest in Peace Uncle Walter.
