Romeo J. Menard Jr., 85, husband of the late Elizabeth A. (Cloutier) Menard, died on Monday, August 6, 2018 at his home. Born in Meriden on June 22, 1933, he was the son of the late Romeo J. and Mildred (Moises) Menard Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Meriden.
Mr. Menard was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Navy as a flight deck crewman on the Aircraft Carrier Tarawa, based out of Pensacola, FL. He was responsible for guiding planes safely back on deck and dealing with the fall out when these landings didn’t go according to plan. Romeo returned home to start his family and continue his career in construction, which had begun at the age of sixteen, where he worked as a part of the crew that built the original Meriden Hospital on Cook Avenue.
He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Marenna and her husband Tony, Bridgette Gudreau and her husband Jim and Dawn Menard and her fiancé Rudy and four sons, Romeo J. Menard III and his wife Tina, Mike Menard and his wife Becky, Kenneth E. Menard and Lyle C. Menard and his wife Maryann. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Nancy Ann Menard and a sister, Carol Cardona.
The funeral will be held on Friday, August 10, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden, CT 06450. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday morning prior to the service from 9 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300 Jacksonville, FL 32256.
