Joseph P. Gawel, 91, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Miller Memorial Nursing home while recovering from an injury. A lifelong resident of Meriden’s north end he was born July 22, 1926 on the family farm to Pawel and Mary (Dziubek) Gawel and lived his entire life in the house he was born in.
He attended local schools and graduated from Meriden High School. He was employed by the Charles Parker Company, C. N. Flagg Co. and the Meriden Water Dept. from which he retired in 1989 after 33 years. A product of the great depression he lived a Spartan life and believed in hard work to achieve one’s goals.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing having raised and trained a number of champion pointing dogs, as well as making numerous wilderness fishing trips to Montana and Canada and canoeing the Allagash river in Maine. He is a former member of the Westfield Hunting Club and the Meriden Rod and Gun club.
He is survived by his nephew Robert Gawel and his wife Deborah, nieces Susan Erwin, Deborah Cooper and her husband Gregory. He was predeceased by four brothers John, Andrew, Edward and a twin brother Jacob and three sisters, Eva Burdacki, Nellie and Sophie Gawel.
The family wishes to thank his caregiver Violeta Skridulis for the devoted care she has given Joseph for the last 12 years. In his later years he enjoyed walking in the woods with Violeta and collecting and identifying mushrooms. He also enjoyed weekly trips to the Middlefield livestock auction and breakfast at the Cup 'N Saucer to "steal" a creamer or two.
