Patricia “Tish” G. Conroy passed away peacefully on September 23, 2019, at her home in Cheshire, CT at the age of 84. Born Patricia Marie Gura in Southington, CT, she was the eldest of five children of the late George M. Gura, M.D. and Mrs. Elizabeth Sullivan Gura both of Southington. After four years at Mount St. Joseph Academy Catholic School for Girls in West Hartford, CT, she was graduated from Lasell Junior College in Newton, MA in 1955 with an AB and RN degree. Remaining in the Boston area, Tish worked at the Peter Bent Brigham and Woman’s Hospital where she had the privilege of assisting in the second kidney transplant ever done. During her years in Boston, she would return to her family’s summer home in Madison, CT where she met Michael Conroy from Meriden, CT, whom she married in June of 1958 in Southington, CT. They lived in New York City for the next seven years during which time she worked for a year at the Hospital for Special Surgery. After a year at Fort Knox, KY, Tish’s husband spent the second year of his military obligation in Vietnam, during which time the family moved to Cheshire, CT where she had her fifth son.

All throughout her life, Tish loved to cook, and welcomed many family members and friends into her home to enjoy her delicious meals and company for holidays and special occasions. She was active for many years in the Cheshire Garden Club, hosting events and winning several awards. Remaining in touch with Lasell, Tish served on the college’s Board of Overseers for 24 years. She also served on the Board of Trustees for Choate Rosemary Hall for four years as Head of the Parent’s Association. An accomplished knitter, who would help anyone who asked, she taught knitting to her granddaughters and the young children at the St. Bridget’s School. As her sons went off to college, she returned to nursing and helped the Red Cross with many blood drives. The family spent their summers in Madison, CT where Tish enjoyed spending time at the Madison Beach Club playing tennis, reading on the beach, and being with many dear friends. She also enjoyed winter, snowstorms, sitting and knitting by the fire, reading, and watching football.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her son, the Reverend Peter C. Conroy of the Portland Diocese of Maine in 1999 and her brother George M. Gura, M.D. a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in 2017. She is survived by her husband, Michael M. Conroy, M.D., a retired general surgeon in Meriden, CT and her four sons, Michael M. Conroy, Jr. of Stamford, CT, Thomas P. Conroy and his wife Sarah Sewall of Waltham, MA, James F. Conroy of Cheshire, CT and Kevin E. Conroy of Portland, ME. Thomas and Sarah blessed Tish with four granddaughters, Madeleine, Cashen, Emma and Sophie. She is also survived by her two brothers, James Gura (Bridget) of Southington, CT, Frank Gura of Essex, CT and her sister Suzanne Gura Fogarty (Timothy) of Pittsburgh, PA.
Calling hours will be Friday, October 4th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St. Meriden, CT. A Catholic Mass of Reconciliation will be held at noon on Saturday, October 5th at St. Bridget of Sweden Parish, 175 Main St, Cheshire, CT. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church.
