James Shamus Ferry
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother and uncle, James Shamus Ferry, age 67, who died on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 60 West, Rocky Hill, CT after a long illness. His loving brother was at his side.
Born in Hartford on December 11, 1950, he was raised in Meriden, the son of the late John J. Ferry and Helen Gentry Ferry. James graduated from Maloney High School, class of 1968. He went on to receive a BA in land management from the University of Connecticut in 1973.
He was a veteran having served proudly in the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he was employed by the United States Park Service in Colorado as a smoke jumper. A lifelong lover of the outdoors, James was an avid hiker. Among his many accomplishments were hiking the Alps, Pyrenees, Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest. Locally, he hiked Mount Washington and Mount Monadnock countless times. Affectionately known as “mountain man”, James shared this love of hiking with his sister. His happiest times were when he was in the mountains hiking alone or with his sister, brother, niece and nephews.
He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Angelo Chirico of Longs, South Carolina. He shared a special bond with Angelo who thought of James as his brother. He is also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Cynthia Ferry of Westbrook, CT, and by a niece and 3 nephews whom he cherished: Angela Biela and her husband, Joseph, Andrew Chirico, Patrick Ferry and his wife, Jenny, and John Ferry and his wife, Irina. He was predeceased by brothers John and Edward Ferry.
The family of James would like to thank the entire staff at 60 West for their compassionate and loving care of Shamus for the past two years. There are no words to express the gratitude we have for these wonderful caregivers.
Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, tribute donation, or Monadnock State Park c/o Suzanne Robidoux, 172 Pembroke Rd., Concord, NH 03301. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home.
