Obituary for Veronica R. "Alice" Bonanzinga (Zakrzewski)

Veronica R. "Alice" Bonanzinga (Zakrzewski)
Veronica Rose Bonanzinga, 95, wife of the late Henry Bonanzinga, died suddenly on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Midstate Medical Center. Born in Meriden on July 23, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Caroline Zakrzewski. She was a lifelong resident of Meriden and was educated in the Meriden schools. Veronica (nickname Alice) was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, the Meriden Council of Catholic Women and a supporter of the Special Olympics. She was employed by New Departure and later worked with her husband Henry in operating Bonanzinga’s Bakery, originally located on Springdale Avenue before moving to South Meriden in the early 70’s. Veronica’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and spending summers near the ocean in Misquamicut, R.I. She was an extraordinary, devoted mother to her children and grandchildren and was truly adored by her family and everyone who knew her.
She leaves two daughters, Marcia DeMonte Pirone and Sandra Wright and her husband, Wayne; five sons, Anthony, Paul, Larry, Bart and Henry Bonanzinga, all of Meriden; five grandchildren, Thomas DeMonte III of Meriden, Gina Barbetta and her husband Vincent of Wallingford, Darren Wright and his wife Beth of Southington, Renay and Wayne Wright of Meriden; three great-grandchildren, Thomas DeMonte IV of Meriden, Alicia Barbetta of Wallingford and Cassondra Wright of Southington. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by two brothers, Edwin Zakrzewski and Raymond Zakrzewski and five sisters, Helen Quigley, Antoinette Zakrzewski, Genevieve Zakrzewski, Mary Martancik and Marcella Regnier. “Auntie Alice” was the last of her siblings to pass away.
The family would like to acknowledge the special care given to her by her beloved doctor, Robert Elwell and nurse, Roberta of Wallingford.
The funeral will be held on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden and 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish, Mt. Carmel Campus, for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call prior to the service Friday morning from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Should friends desire, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, 115 Lewis Avenue, Meriden, CT 06450 or to the Special Olympics of Hamden, 2666 State Street, Suite #1, Hamden, CT 06517-2232.
